The 220-page August edition of African Pilot with three picture gallerias and 12 videos was completed on Saturday 3 August and sent to the world the same day. Once again African Pilot has consistently delivered a monthly aviation magazine that has more relevant features and is far easier to read on any digital device that any other aviation magazine in Africa. This edition features the special experience of the South African camping group that travelled to Oshkosh in July, Sling Aircraft’s award at Oshkosh, AERO South Africa exhibition, the amazing Elders Flight, Polokwane airshow, Avionics and Instrumentation as well as headsets and many other interesting features. In addition, the magazine also contains all the normal chapters such as Airline Pilot, Commercial Pilot, Helicopter Pilot, Military Pilot, Sport Pilot a Technical section and the four Historical subjects. Once again, the August edition of African Pilot takes on a completely different flavour to previous magazines mainly due to the extensive photography and embedded videos.
The main feature of the September edition of African Pilot will be an extensive EAA AirVenture 2024 report, the Farnborough airshow, Charter companies and Aviation Safety. Every month, African Pilot features all aspects of aviation from Airline business to Recreational and Sport Aviation, whilst Military aviation, Commercial and Technical aviation matters are addressed monthly. Within African Pilot’s monthly Historical section, we feature the Best of the Best, Names to Remember, Fact File and our monthly Historical feature.

Plane crash in Brazil’s São Paulo state kills all 62 on board
A plane has crashed in the Brazilian state of São Paulo, killing all 62 people on board. The twin-engine turboprop was flying from Cascavel in the southern state of Paraná to Guarulhos airport in São Paulo city when it came down on Friday in the town of Vinhedo, Voepass airline says.
Footage circulating on social media shows a plane descending vertically, spiralling as it falls. After initial uncertainty over the number of people on board, Voepass confirmed on Saturday that the ATR 72-500 was carrying 58 passengers and four crew. There were no survivors.
Brazil’s President, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, expressed solidarity with the families and friends of the victims. São Paulo’s state Governor, Tarcísio Gomes de Freitas, declared three days of mourning. The authorities said the flight recorders had been retrieved. ATR, the French-Italian plane maker, said it would co-operate with the investigation.
The plane landed in a residential area but no-one on the ground was injured. Officials say only one home in a local condominium complex was damaged.

Blow to airline environmental
An advert for the world’s first transatlantic flight to be 100% powered by so-called sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) has been banned, as the advertising watchdog said it was misleading.
The radio ad, which promoted the transatlantic flight, was misleading in its unqualified “100% sustainable aviation fuel” claim, said regulator the Advertising Standards Agency (ASA).
Future Virgin Atlantic ads referencing SAF must include information explaining the environmental impact of the fuel, the ASA added.
The decision strikes at airlines’ ability to promote a key plank of their emissions reduction goals.

Two astronauts are stuck in space
How will they pass time (and survive) until 2025?
The two astronauts were only meant to be in space for eight days, but now they might not return until 2025. Do they have enough supplies for such a stint, how are they coping mentally and what is day-to-day life like up there?
It’s the plot of plenty of sci-fi films: two astronauts are stranded in space and don’t yet know how they’re getting back.
Sunita “Suni” Williams and Commander Barry “Butch” Wilmore arrived at the International Space Station (ISS) in June as the first crew to test Boeing’s new Starliner, which suffered helium leaks and thruster failures before it docked – raising questions over how safe it is for the return flight.
Boeing has insisted the astronauts are not stuck and said “there’s no increased risk” in bringing them back in the Starliner, but NASA is contemplating getting them back on a SpaceX flight instead.

Nokia and Swisscom Broadcast to deploy drones-as-a-service network
Last week, Swisscom Broadcast chose Nokia to deploy a drones-as-a-service network across Switzerland. By deploying 300 Drone-in-Box units, the companies said they plan to enable emergency response, perimeter protection, and infrastructure inspection, which will help keep public safety workers safe.
In addition, resource optimization can help to save the lives of those involved in incidents, Nokia said. The company explained that remotely operated drones will gather relevant information within the first minutes after an emergency, enhancing first responders’ situational awareness.
“We are pleased to select Nokia as a partner for this important infrastructure project in Switzerland,” stated Dominik Müller, CEO of Swisscom Broadcast. “Together, we can speed up the go-to-market of our drones-as-a-service offering to our customers in the industrial and public safety landscape in Switzerland.”
“The integration of our existing People Density Tool and our drone operations expertise with Nokia’s industrial-grade hardware in combination with an open and future-proof software architecture is an important key to support such large-scale projects,” he added.
